English III
11th Grade American Literature is a survey style language arts course where we will explore various genres of literature, the different writing styles, and view different forms of multimedia from the pre-colonial times to present day in America. We will focus on the major literary forms of the emerging nation, analyze the literary themes and trends, and research and compose several papers and presentations. Our classroom will be one of work, collaboration, corroboration, experimentation, performance, and celebration. We will learn the music that is in words and our expressions will be recitals. We will learn how to listen and speak – a conversational dance of rhyme and reason. The theme of the American Dream will be examined as we do literary analyses of noteworthy periods of America’s history. This is essential as you are the future and you must be prepared to face the future problems of America. We will see how America has evolved and continues to evolve and redefine itself through its literature. We will discover what it means to be better U.S. citizens, what it meant then and what it means now, all through literature. The idea of the American dream was there from the very beginning, and it evolved from era to era, adapting itself with each new challenge and concern. Pilgrims and pioneers built their lives upon it. Great leaders enabled it through laws. Wars tested what it meant to be American. The outcasts expanded it and redefined it. The crises questioned its validity. New generations revived it and adopted it—making it their own. This dream is not only for the past but also the future. You are the dream and the American experiment continues.
